Pilates - focus on a popular activity

As you've probably noticed, pilates has been everywhere for some time now. More and more studios are springing up, and its merits are being touted on the web. As you'll have gathered by now, we'd like to take a closer look at this fashionable activity.

What is pilates?

For those who don't know, pilates is a form of gymnastics invented by Joseph Pilates. A man with a passion for anatomy and frail health, he spent his life developing exercises to improve and optimize body functions, with the aim of making the body “as strong as a Greek spine and as supple as a cat”.

The Pilates method rests on 6 pillars that lay the foundations of the discipline :

  • Breathing
  • Concentration
  • Control
  • Stabilization
  • Fluidity
  • Precision

This activity combines muscle strengthening, abdominal and gluteal exercises, stretching and a gentle abdominal method.

How to practice?

Pilates can be practised individually at home, or in a group in a studio.
There are many different types of Pilates, the most popular of which include: classical Pilates, yoga Pilates, mat-based Pilates Power and machine-based Reformer Pilates.

How does a session work?

The principle is quite simple: you perform a series of rather slow movements, controlled by your breathing and guided by your teacher. A session lasts around 45 minutes, the time it takes on average for your body to work its muscles, spine and posture.

What are the benefits of pilates?

The Pilates method works the muscles in depth through specific exercises, but that's not its only field of action.
In fact, it can :

  • improves the body's natural posture
  • develop flexibility
  • refine the silhouette
  • reconnect with your body
  • provides a gentle yet physical activity

What's more, pilates is suitable for everyone.

Take care of your whole body with pilates! Have you tried pilates yet?
